Lake Natron
Flamingos, Hot Springs & Volcanoes
Lake Natron is one of Tanzania’s most otherworldly landscapes — a vast, shallow salt and soda lake tucked into the northern rift, framed by volcanic hills. Its reddish waters, caused by microorganisms thriving in the alkaline conditions, create an almost surreal setting that feels far removed from the usual safari circuit.
The lake is famous for being the breeding ground of thousands of lesser flamingos, turning the waters into a living, moving pink carpet at certain times of the year. But beyond the birds, this is a place of contrasts: volcanic rocks, dramatic escarpments, numerous natural hot springs, and seemingly endless horizons.
It’s remote, rugged, wild, and one of our favorite places — the kind of place that rewards adventurous travelers who love walking among untouched landscapes and experiencing nature at its rawest.
