Usambara Mountains
Tanzania’s Hidden Hiking Paradise
The Usambara Mountains are like Tanzania’s secret garden, rising from the coastal plains and forming part of the ancient Eastern Arc Mountains, famed for their unique biodiversity. Sometimes called the Switzerland of Africa thanks to their cool climate, rolling green hills, adventurous hiking trails and dramatic vistas, you might also feel more like you’ve wandered into the countryside of Bali or northern Vietnam – with their terraced slopes and misty valleys dotted with banana trees, rice paddies and friendly faces.
This is one of Tanzania’s hidden gems. Tourism is still light here, so your hikes are often shared only with the chirping of birds, the rustle of banana leaves, and greetings from locals along the way. These highlands are home to the Sambaa people, whose traditions and farming techniques have been passed down for generations. Expect warm smiles, colourful markets, and the occasional impromptu offer to taste freshly harvested sugarcane or home-brewed tea.

Travel Tips
-
Don’t rush. The beauty of the Usambaras is in slowing down — sitting on a rock to watch farmers tending their terraces, or pausing at a viewpoint to simply breathe in the crisp mountain air. With fewer tourists around, your experience feels more personal, more intimate, and far from the safari crowds.
