Olmoti Crater
Hike Tanzania’s Hidden Highlands Gem

Olmoti Crater is a shallow, sunken caldera in the northern part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, measuring about 6.5 km across and sitting at 3,080 meters above sea level. Its name, “Olmoti,” comes from the Maasai word for “cooking pot,” a nod to its bowl-like shape that becomes clear when you hike up to the crater rim. From there, the views stretch across unspoiled highlands, with Mount Lolmalasin, Tanzania’s third-highest mountain, standing proudly in the distance.

Unlike the more famous Ngorongoro Crater, Olmoti sees far fewer visitors, making it a peaceful and authentic escape. The crater floor is covered in grass and split by a river valley, providing water and grazing pastures that attract wildlife year-round.

Olmoti is perfect for adventurous travelers who enjoy trekking, exploring remote landscapes, and connecting genuinely with the nearby Maasai communities.

When to Visit
