Mafia Island
Whalesharks and sleeping under the Stars
Just off Tanzania’s southern coast lies Mafia Island, a place where the rhythm of life slows to the pace of the tides. The beaches here aren’t about crowded bars or loud music — they’re about soft white sand, turquoise lagoons, and dhows gliding silently across the water. But the real magic? It’s under the surface.
The surrounding Mafia Island Marine Park is one of the richest marine habitats in East Africa. Coral gardens in every colour of the rainbow hide schools of reef fish, while green turtles glide past like gentle sea guardians. From November to March, you can swim alongside the ocean’s largest fish — the whale shark — an experience that feels more like drifting with a bus-sized friend than a predator. From August to October, humpback whales pass through, sometimes breaching so close you can hear the splash.
