Lake Manyara National Park
Birds & Forest Trails
Lake Manyara might be one of Tanzania’s smaller national parks, but it’s proof that size isn’t everything. Hugging the base of the Rift Valley escarpment, this park is a kaleidoscope of landscapes — from groundwater forests and open grasslands to the vast alkaline lake where hippos lounge.

A few years ago, unusually heavy rains caused the lake to flood, changing its ecosystem. Many animals and birds moved to drier ground, and the great flocks of flamingos that once turned the water pink are now a rarer sight. That said, Manyara still has its magic — and if you’re lucky, you might spot its most famous residents: the tree-climbing lions. Whether they’re escaping insects, enjoying the breeze, or just feeling lazy, seeing one stretched out along a branch is a real treat.

The name “Manyara” comes from the Maasai word emanyara, the traditional fencing made from the park’s spiky Euphorbia plants. Even today, the forests feel like a natural enclosure — alive with monkeys leaping between branches, elephants emerging from the shade, and giraffes strolling past acacias.
