Empakaai Crater
A Hidden Volcanic Oasis in Tanzania
Rising dramatically from the northern highlands, Empakaai Crater is a volcanic caldera that is almost 8 km wide, and 300 meters deep, housing its own emerald-blue lake. Imagine standing on the rim and looking down into a peaceful world of flamingos, zebras, and the occasional Maasai herder guiding cattle along the crater edges.
Although remote and relatively unknown, Empakaai is a paradise for adventurous travelers seeking quiet, untouched landscapes. Nature walks along the rim and hikes descending into the crater offer spectacular panoramas, while multi-day treks from Empakaai to Lake Natron take you deeper into the Rift Valley’s volcanic heart.

When to Visit
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from June to October, when trails are easiest. And even though you’ll find flamingos year round here, there might be more between August and October when the surrounding lakes start to dry up and flamingos are in search of new water sources.
How to Get to the Empakaai Crater
Access is typically via Karatu, with a mix of driving and guided treks. Being remote, it’s best to plan with local guides who know the terrain and can arrange overnight stays or camping near the crater rim.
