Arusha
Tanzania’s Safari Hub at the Foot of Mount Meru

Arusha isn’t just a city; it’s the beating heart of Tanzania’s safari world. Sitting at the foot of Mount Meru and with Kilimanjaro just down the road, Arusha is the place where most adventures begin. Think of it as the safari capital — buzzing with travelers, guides, and a good dose of local chaos. But don’t just rush off to the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. Arusha itself has its own charm, and if you give it a chance, it might just surprise you.

Whether you’re here for a night before your safari or a couple of days to soak it all in, Arusha is a blend of mountain views, lively streets, and warm hospitality that makes you feel instantly at home (even if the traffic takes a little getting used to — trust us, it’s part of the experience!).

Travel Tips

  • Altitude check: Arusha sits at around 1,400 meters above sea level. That means cooler evenings — so pack a light sweater.

  • Cash is king: There are many ATMs, but not all of them love foreign cards. Always handy to carry some Tanzanian shillings or USD.

  • Take your time: Don’t treat Arusha as just a pit stop. Even one extra day here can give you a more relaxed start (and help you shake off that jet lag).

  • Traffic zen: Yes, it’s chaotic. Yes, it’s slow. But hey, you’re in safari mode now — hakuna matata, right?

What to Do in Arusha

  • Arusha National Park – Just 30 minutes from town, this is Tanzania’s underrated little gem. You won’t find lions here, but you will spot giraffes, buffalo, flamingos, and even colobus monkeys. Plus, you get Mount Meru looming dramatically in the background — a perfect warm-up for Kilimanjaro.

  • Shanga – A workshop that turns recycled glass and metal into beautiful crafts, while also providing jobs for people with disabilities. It’s inspiring, colorful, and you’ll definitely leave with a keepsake (or three).

  • Napuru Falls – A short drive from town, then a hike through lush greenery, and suddenly — boom! — a powerful waterfall appears. It’s a local favorite for picnics, so don’t be surprised if you end up sharing snacks with new friends.

  • Local Markets – Dive into Arusha’s lively markets where everything is buzzing — fabrics, colors, spices, fruit, handmade crafts. It’s the best place to practice your bargaining skills (and maybe walk away with a kitenge fabric you didn’t know you needed).

  • Food & Vibes – Arusha is full of little cafés and restaurants where you can try everything from traditional Tanzanian nyama choma (grilled meat) to surprisingly good pizza. Grab a rooftop spot, order a cold drink, and 'make stories' as a true Tanzanian would say.
